Keep a Look Out for These Tell-Tale Signs of a Lawn Grub Infestation | Turf Badger

No One Does Pest Control Like Turf Badger!
This time of year is the beginning of grub season in Wisconsin. If you did not schedule preventative grub control this year, your lawn is at risk of a grub infestation. You will need to keep a close eye on your lawn for any signs of grubs so you can catch them early before they cause too much damage to your lawn. Some tell-tale signs that may indicate that your lawn might be infested with grubs include spongy feeling grass, grass that lifts up like a carpet, an increased animal presence on your property, and your grass dying with no explanation.

Your Lawn Feels Spongey

If you walk on your lawn and it feels springy or spongey, you may be dealing with a grub infestation. Grubs chew on your lawn’s roots and they can sever the connection between the roots of your grass and the grass itself. This will cause your grass to become weak, and you could sink down into your lawn as you walk on it. If you notice your turf feels spongy when you walk on it, there is a good chance that grubs are the cause of it.

Your Grass Lifts Up Like a Carpet

Grubs feast on the roots of your grass, and if there is a large grub presence on your lawn, they could completely eat through the roots, causing the turf to become detached from the soil. When this happens, your turf could easily be lifted up like a carpet because there will be nothing there to anchor the grass to the soil. If you suspect that grubs have infested your lawn, you can go to the area where you suspect grubs are and gently tug on the grass. If it lifts right up like a carpet without any resistance, there is a good chance that grubs have infested your lawn.

There Is an Increased Animal Presence on Your Lawn

Another sign that could indicate that your lawn is infested with grubs is if you are noticing an increased animal presence on your lawn. Certain animals like birds, raccoons, and opossums love to eat grubs, and once they find a spot where grubs are, they will continue returning to that spot to feed. If you are noticing an unusual animal presence on your lawn, and especially if they are digging through your lawn, that could mean that they are there feeding on grubs.

Your Grass is Dying Without an Explanation

If you notice your lawn is dying, but you are fertilizing it and watering it frequently, grubs could be the culprit. Since grubs feed on the roots of your grass, your grass can become completely detached from the soil, and it won’t be able to absorb the nutrients that it needs to stay alive. If your grass is starting to die and there is no good explanation for it, there is a chance grubs could be the cause. You should reach out to a lawn care professional to inspect your property as they will be able to confirm if your lawn is infested with grubs or if your lawn is dying for a different reason.

You can help your lawn recover from grub damage by scheduling aeration and overseeding services.
