1) Droppings

One of the most obvious signs that your home is infested with rats or mice is if you notice droppings around your home. These creatures are pretty sneaky and like to maneuver around undetected, so you’ll likely find their droppings in places such as inside drawers, underneath sinks, or other hidden areas in your home. While finding droppings is not ideal, they can help you determine what type of rodent you are dealing with. Mice droppings tend to be small, light in color, and have pointed ends, while rat droppings are darker, larger, and have blunt ends.

2) Gnaw Marks

One of the biggest signs that your home is infested with rodents is gnaw marks. These creatures love to gnaw on pretty much anything they can get their mouths on. If the gnaw marks are on the larger side, you are likely dealing with rats. If the gnaw marks are smaller, then it’s probably mice.
They also use their teeth to shred materials for their nests. If you come across shredded paper or cloth, it’s a sure sign that you have a rodent problem. If you see what looks like bite marks anywhere in your home, you should take action to remove these rodents right away.

3) Tracks

Rats and mice love to scamper around your home, and in doing so, they will leave behind footprints of dirt and grime. If you suspect you have a rodent problem, you can carefully check to see if you notice any tracks around your home. You’ll want to check in areas where rodents typically are found, such as in cupboards and underneath sinks.
If you suspect you have rodents in a certain area, but you never actually see them, you can try this little trick. Lay a thin layer of flour down in the area where you suspect the rodents are frequently visiting and check back periodically to see if you notice any tracks. If you see tracks, you know you have a rodent problem and it’s time to call in professionals to get rid of them.

4) Scratching or Scurrying Noises

If you hear scratching or scurrying noises in your home, there is a very good chance that these noises are being made by either rats or mice. Both of these rodents are nocturnal, so you will likely only hear these noises during the night. Rodents can be anywhere in your home, so you may hear scurrying or scratching sounds coming from the floor, the cabinets, and your attic, just to name a few common places.
